How to Build Confidence by Helping Others

Over the last few weeks, we have seen how the Coronavirus outbreak has dramatically affected our world and caused so much uncertainty for the future. As we’re all trying to deal with this crisis and adjust to our “new normal” there are ways we can come together and help each other in this time of need. An added bonus here is that we can build our own confidence by giving back and helping others. By taking action, no matter how big or small, these acts of kindness will help us get through this crisis with a greater sense of identity and confidence.

Here are 3 simple ways we can help others during this time:

1.     Check in on a family member or friend

Now more than ever, we need to come together and support each other. Reach out to a friend or family member just to see how they’re doing. Everyone deals with things differently, but we’re all struggling one way or another. Even our “strong” friends are coping. A phone call, text, or video chat are small gestures that go a long way to tell someone we’re thinking of them and we care. If they seem down, ask questions and try to be supportive and empathetic to their feelings.

Hearing a familiar voice or seeing a smiling face can make a difference in everyone’s day and connecting with those we love is always a strong confidence booster.

2.     Get creative with small acts of kindness

In this new world of unknowns, one of the best things we can do is focus on what we can control. There are ways to get involved and make a difference even from your home. Send a virtual message or card to a medical worker, first responder, or essential employee thanking them for their services. This is also a great activity for children to get involved with to help promote generosity. On the next trip to the grocery store or pharmacy, reach out to an elderly neighbor or someone who’s immunocompromised and pick up items for them. If using a delivery service, reach out before placing the order and add what they need. Or maybe put your organizational skills to use and arrange a meal train for your local hospital. Whatever it may be, by taking action and lending a helping hand, you’re making a difference in someone’s life and being rewarded with a confidence boost. Talk about a win-win!

3.     Donate to a charity and support local businesses

There are so many organizations that are paying it forward and doing what they can to help in this crisis. Masks and other protective equipment are being manufactured from all different companies, food is being donated from restaurants and grocery stores, and so on. No matter the amount, this is the time to contribute what you can to those in need. Giving even just a little can go a long way.

What if we all made a plan to support one local business a week? Take a break from cooking and order delivery from a favorite local restaurant. Or buy a gift card online from a local retailer to use in the future. This will help those dealing with the biggest hits while making you feel good for doing what you can to help. This is a tough time for everyone, but realize that any little bit helps and, by giving back, we’re benefiting too by bringing more meaning to life and boosting our own confidence.

When we practice generosity, we build confidence as we feel more valued and capable. Stay strong and safe. We’re all in this together and by doing our part, a little action can go a long way. We’re here for you and are confident that there is light at the end of the tunnel!
